Divorce: Did You Know?

While divorce is common in today's world, there are many unknown facts and information about divorcee, or marriage dissolution, which are not commonly known. Some are even funny, proving that even a subject with as much hurt and stress can bring an occasional smile.

For instance:

* Wichita, Kansas, has a law that says that if a man doesn't treat his mother-in-law nicely, that cannot be used as grounds for a divorce. Really? Some mothers-in-law should definitely qualify as a reason for dissolving a marriage!

* In Italy, a new bridegroom brought his mother on his honeymoon. No one seemed to be surprised when the newly married bride filed for divorce after just a brief 3 weeks of marriage....

* A wife can be bartered for food or clothing in the Aleutian Islands. Is designer clothing a reason for bartering you wife? What about a Big Mac?

* In Germany, there is an opportunity called the Mass of Lament. It's a time where family members and friends gather in church to listen to the divorcing couple as they explain why they are ending the marriage. In America, we use FaceBook instead.

Divorce crosses all social stratas, all religions and all cultures. While there may be a light side, it is most often nothing to laugh about. Divorce still carries a stigma socially. We have only had one U. S. President who was divorced - Ronald Regan was previously married to actress Jane Wyman before his marriage to Nancy. Divorce statistics are very telling: one in four families will be involved in a divorce. Each year in the United States, there are over one million people whose parents will go through a divorce.

How can you beat the odds? Children do seem to hold marriages together. If there is a marriage with no children, the divorce rate is just above those marriages with offspring. If you are in the military, choose something other than the Air Force. That branch of the military has the highest divorce rate. Move to the East Coast, specifically New Jersey. They have the lowest divorce rate. Stay away from Nevada, it has the highest. Wyoming and Florida don't look very good, either.

Professions can make a difference in divorce proceedings. Bartenders and massage therapists have low rates of successful marriages, but dancers and choreographers have more. Best professions for a long lasting marriage are salespeople, clergy, optometrists and engineers. Also bad for a successful marriage is if one partner gains more than 20% of their body weight.
