DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
Domestic Violence is greatly misunderstood by most people. The common assumption is that domestic violence requires a physical act before any conduct will be considered domestic violence. California law has a much broader perspective of domestic violence. Mental, emotional and financial abuse are also included in domestic violence.
Constant telephone calls, stalking, following, inappropriate comments, showing up at inappropriate times and places uninvited can all be considered domestic violence. Abusive or threatening emails or voice mails, refusal to provide funds for the necessities of life can also be considered as domestic violence. The rule is; Do unto the other spouse as you want to have done to you. We all know this as the golden rule of life and it should be no less considered in divorce. Unfortunately, most parties going through a divorce are not able to follow the rule and end up in serious trouble with the court.
In addition to the Golden Rule, remember two other important rules. One, never be afraid or feel foolish about calling the police for help. Even if you only have questions, it is better to call the police then to be seriously hurt because you were to afraid or ashamed to call. Second, remember that domestic violence can be committed by either gender. Although, we do not hear or see many incidents of domestic violence by women against men, it is no less criminal or less punishable.
If you think that you may be a victim of domestic violence immediately contact 911 and at a minimum, start asking questions. The police will be powerless to help you if you do not call. For other related resources regarding Domestic violence you may refer to the Resource Section
